UF could extend its campus as far as Lakeland under proposed bill

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – The University of Florida could add a new campus under a bill filed this week in the Florida legislature.

If approved, the bill would have UF take over Florida Polytechnic University just along Interstate 4 in Lakeland.

Committee members have told various media outlets that a proposed merger would make tuition more affordable for students at the smaller schools.

Florida Polytechnic University, a fairly young school established in 2012, specializes in STEM programs and its enrollment is 1,300.

The New College of Florida based in Sarasota would also be one of the smaller schools affected. Under this bill, the public liberal arts college would merge with Florida State University.

A UF spokesperson had no comment at last check.

The bill will be considered in the house education committee Wednesday morning.
