UPDATE: Charges dropped against Gators defensive back Brian Edwards

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The State Attorney's office is dropping charges of battery against UF defensive back Brian Edwards due to insufficient evidence to sustain a conviction.

The University of Florida football player accused of battery is pleading not guilty.

Defensive back, Brian Edwards, issued a written plea of not guilty today and is asking for a jury trial.

Edwards was arrested yesterday by Gainesville police after a witness called 911 after seeing Edwards grab his girlfriend by the throat as she tried to leave.

According to the arrest report, marks on her neck were visible.

A standing no-contact order has been issued. He has since been released from jail.

A defensive back for the Florida Gators, Brian Edwards, was arrested Monday by the Gainesville Police Department on a misdemeanor battery charge.

According to the arrest report, he grabbed his girlfriend of two years by the neck in an argument leaving marks on her neck. She was trying to leave when he made this attempt to prevent her from doing so. The whole thing took place at an apartment complex.

The witness observed the entire incident, intervened, and called 911.

He is currently being held in the Alachua County Jail.
