ABOUT EARTH DAY:
Earth Day is a worldwide event that brings attention to protecting the environment on April 22 each year. The movement started 49 years ago when Senator Gaylord Nelson witnessed the impact of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill which killed nearly 4,000 sea birds. The oil spill is the third largest oil spill in US history and was the largest at the time.
Concerns about air and water pollution fueled 20 million environmentalists across the United States to protest for stricter environmental protections across the United States on April 22, 1970.
In 1990, Earth Day boosted recycling efforts across the world according to the Earth Day Network. In 1995 President Bill Clinton to award Senator Nelson the highest honor a civilian can receive from a president, the Presidential Medal of Freedom for Nelson's role as the founder of Earth Day.
Earth Day Network claims that about 1 billion people in 192 countries participate in Earth Day today. Earth Day 2019's theme was "Protect Our Species" to raise awareness of threatened species.
