It's one of the biggest weekends of the year in Gainesville. The 50th annual NHRA Gatornationals continues through Sunday at Gainesville Raceway. Drivers will compete in top fuel, funny car, pro stock and other categories in what is the east coast opener for the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. For more sports action, head over to UF. The Gator baseball team is home for a three game series against Mississippi State, starting tonight at 6:30. Saturday, lacrosse faces number three North Carolina at 1 pm, while the Gator volleyball team is on the court for a spring match versus Georgia Tech at 10 and 12:45 Saturday. It's at the Lemerand Athletic Center.
There's more to do on the UF campus. The Phillips Center is host to the new production of The Sound of Music. You'll hear the Tony, Grammy and Academy Award winning music we're accustomed to. The original Broadway production started 60 years ago in 1959. You can see the new production tonight at 7:30. Next door, the Florida Museum of Natural History is holding its Can You Dig It event Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm. If you love geology, digging for fossils, checking out gems and minerals, it's a fun event for you and your family.
Lake City is home to the Florida Gateway Pro Rodeo through Sunday. Bull and bronc riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing and team roping are part of the event. There'll be a Kids Zone for younger members of your family. The rodeo starts tonight and Saturday night at 8, and Sunday at 2pm at the Columbia County Rodeo Arena. Just north of Lake City, the town of White Springs has the Wild Azalea Festival Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm. A pancake breakfast, arts and crafts, music and more food are part of the event. It's at the Bailey F. Ogburn Recreational Facility.
Near the Gulf coast, it's time for Shrimpapalooza! The annual festival is hosted by the Rotary Club of Homosassa Charitable Foundation. The fun begins at 9 am and goes until 6 pm. There'll be a parade at 10 with plenty of food, fun and music for all. It's at the Homosassa Civic Center. Not too far away, Inverness is having its St. Patrick's Festival and Parade Saturday from 5 to 9 pm. It's at Courthouse Square downtown.
Also this weekend: SwampCon at UF's Reitz Union. Trenton's Quilt Festival is Saturday from 9 to 4....and the Suwannee County Fair is tonight through next Saturday in Live Oak.
