Three years after being denied in the state finals, the Trenton Tigers captured the Class 1A girls state basketball championship on Tuesday, defeating Holmes County, 43-31 at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland.
Taniah Bowers and Samarie McHenry each scored 11 points to lead the Tigers, who won their first state crown since 1980.
Trenton used an 18-2 run during the first half to pull away from the Blue Devils. The Tigers held a 24-16 advantage at halftime.
Following a low scoring third quarter, Trenton was still in front, 29-27. But in the fourth, the Tigers had one more drive in them, outscoring the Blue Devils 14-4 to assure the victory. The championship caps a 27-3 season for the Tigers.
