Branford softball team ready to “return the favor” to Liberty County
Branford has won their last seven games and are back in the Class 1A state semifinal game
BRANFORD, FL (WCJB): No one wanted a second chance at a state title than the Branford softball team. This year they bring along a more resilient and older mindset to Clermont and against Liberty County.
Throughout the season, the Lady Bucs (23-6) were challenged multiple times against Williston and rival Fort White. Branford started off hot with a 4-0 record but lost back-to-back battles with the Indians. The Lady Bucs set sail for another winning streak but hit rough waters with Trenton.
Cloey Criggall embraces being captain because the junior’s message is universal with everyone and led to returning to state.
Criggall said, “Honestly, quite easy because I feel like everyone wants it, you know it’s easy being a leader when everybody else wants it as bad as you do.”
However, after a humbling loss to Middleburg. Branford wins their next four and battles Ft. White in the district and regional title games.
Branford pitcher Laila Arnold said about facing Liberty County again, “It’s a nerve racking thing obviously because you are playing a team that you played last year, so it is kind of difficult to you know wrap your mind around it, but you also have to overcome it. This year is totally different and I feel like we have grown as a team.”
Madyson Sikes shot a game winning homer in walk off fashion to win 1-0 over the Indians.
Sikes said about the rematch, “I love that we have Liberty County first round because we get a second chance at them especially in the first round they beat us out last year and it’s amazing.”
On Friday, they have a golden opportunity to avenge their state title loss to the (20-6) Bulldogs in the semifinal game. First pitch is 1:45 pm in Clermont.
