OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) -Officials with AdventHealth Ocala announced Tuesday afternoon the hospital has been recognized as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Minimally Invasive Surgery by the Women’s Choice Award.

Hospital leaders said this award signifies that AdventHealth Ocala is in the top 9% of 4,675 U.S. hospitals reviewed.

Other hospitals in North Central Florida that have been honored with the award in the past include UF Health Shands Florida in Alachua County, Ed Fraser Memorial Hospital in Columbia County, and Mease Dunedin Hospital and Davita Laurel Manor Dialysis Center at the Villages in Marion County.

Leaders at AdventHealth Ocala are among 538 award recipients who have met the highest standards for minimally invasive surgery across the country.

“We are honored to receive this recognition, which highlights the outstanding dedication and skill that our staff and providers bring to those who live and visit our community,” AdventHealth Ocala President and CEO Erika Skula said. “This award is a fantastic exemplification of the exceptional, whole-person care AdventHealth Ocala strives to provide every minute of every day.”

To achieve the Best Hospitals for Minimally Invasive Surgery distinction, hospitals must meet specific criteria, leaders at AdventHealth said.

They must be listed by the American Hospital Directory as providing Robotic Surgery and qualify through accreditation from the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery (AIMIS) or designation as a Center of Excellence for Robotic Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery, or Minimally Invasive Gynecology by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC).

Hospitals must also have a patient recommendation rating of 67% or higher (above the national average) from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) HCAHPS survey.

Any hospital that receives a “worse than the national rate” rating from CMS for deaths from serious complications or surgical site infections related to hysterectomy or colon surgery is disqualified from consideration.

“The Women’s Choice Award provides consumers with an objective, uniform and fact-based trusted resource to find the best hospitals that excel in minimally invasive surgery,” said Delia Passi, Founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award.  “Minimally invasive surgery is a great option for women as it requires less recovery time and reduces pain and complications, allowing her a quicker return to what matters most in life.”
