GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - A tradition that began as a simple thank-you to law enforcement officers is continuing in Gainesville.

Retired Gainesville Police Lieutenant Matt Nechodom and his friend Jacqui Knowles provided lunch to 325 first responders ahead of Saturday’s Florida Gators football game against Oklahoma.

The annual “Lunch for Law Enforcement” event takes place on the north lawn near the Gator Shop following the pregame police briefing.

Meals are prepared by Big Lee, an Ocala-based food truck operator.

Organizers say the event is a way to show appreciation for first responders who serve the community, including those working on game day.
